The history:

Heaven's Gate was a UFO religious group founded in the 1970s by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, who taught that Earth was about to be "recycled" and that the only escape was to shed the human "vehicle" and ascend to a spacecraft they believed was trailing the Hale-Bopp comet. In March 1997, 39 members died together in a rented mansion near San Diego, each found neatly dressed in black with matching sneakers and a small bag packed for the journey. The group's website — one of the earliest on the internet — is still online today, maintained by former members.
