On September 11, 2001, Benjamin Netanyahu was asked what the attacks meant for relations between the United States and Israel. He was reported as responding:
“It’s very good.”
He immediately qualified the statement:
“Well, not very good, but it will generate immediate sympathy.”
His point was that the attacks would change American attitudes toward terrorism and increase sympathy for Israel not that the deaths or attacks themselves were desirable.
