Weeks after the World Trade Center lease changed hands, September 11 created one of the strangest insurance battles in modern history.

The WTC property was insured for roughly $3.5 billion per occurrence, triggering years of litigation over one extraordinary question: Were the two aircraft impacts one occurrence—or two?

The resulting settlements ultimately produced approximately $4.55 billion in insurance proceeds connected to the WTC property.

This graphic turns that surreal piece of financial history into an intentionally uncomfortable vintage-style design: the Twin Towers surrounded by cascading money, with the staggering $4,550,000,000 figure dominating the artwork.

A dark historical graphic about contracts, catastrophe, and perhaps the most consequential interpretation of the words “per occurrence.”
