WONDERFUL THINGS

Object 001 - Valley of the Kings, 1922

From DoNotOpen - a series on the places, discoveries and sealed things humanity found and could not leave alone. Vintage poster art, heavyweight boxy fit, printed on demand.

The story:

On November 26, 1922, archaeologist Howard Carter cut a small hole into a sealed doorway in Egypt's Valley of the Kings and held a candle to the gap. Behind it lay the nearly intact tomb of the boy-king Tutankhamun, untouched for over 3,000 years. When his patron Lord Carnarvon asked whether he could see anything, Carter reportedly answered: "Yes - wonderful things." Within months, Carnarvon was dead from an infected mosquito bite, and the press invented the legend of the Pharaoh's Curse. The treasures were real. The curse was a newspaper's idea.
