The history:

The Finders were a secretive communal group formed in Washington, D.C., in the 1970s under a man known as Marion Pettie. Members lived collectively, pooled resources, and were known for a nomadic, experimental lifestyle and cryptic "games" of observation and travel. The group drew national attention in 1987 when several members were briefly detained in Florida with a group of children; the sensational early reports gave way to dropped charges, and later reviews found no evidence for the most extreme claims. Decades later, the story remains a fixture of conspiracy lore — remembered less for what was proven than for how strange, and how unresolved, the whole affair stayed.
