The story:

Tempus fugit — time flees. The phrase comes from Virgil, and by the seventeenth century it was carved into clock faces, church walls and gravestones across Europe. It belonged to the vanitas tradition: paintings and engravings crowded with skulls, hourglasses, guttering candles and wilting flowers, all arranged to remind a wealthy buyer that his wealth was temporary. These were not warnings against enjoying life. They were commissioned by people who enjoyed it enormously, hung in comfortable houses, and meant something closer to: this ends, so pay attention to it.
