Chernobyl - Elephant's Foot

The story:

On April 26, 1986, Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded during a botched safety test, releasing more radioactive material than any accident in history and forcing the permanent evacuation of the nearby city of Pripyat. Deep beneath the ruined reactor, molten fuel, sand and concrete fused into a mass of "corium" that hardened into a formation workers named the Elephant's Foot. When it was first photographed, standing near it for a few minutes was a lethal dose. Decades on, it has cooled but never gone quiet — the exclusion zone remains sealed, and the object is still there, still active, still waiting.
