The story:
For centuries, dissection was forbidden, then grudgingly permitted, then performed in public theatres with paying audiences. Anatomists worked against the clock and the smell, often on the bodies of executed criminals the only supply the law allowed. What they found overturned more than a thousand years of inherited medical authority: Galen had described the anatomy of apes and pigs and assumed humans matched. They did not. Modern medicine begins in those rooms, with people cutting open the dead to find out, finally, what was actually inside.
Memento vivere remember to live. The older phrase is memento mori, remember that you will die. Both were carved in the same chapels, usually on the same wall.
