The story:

Locusta of Gaul was the most famous poisoner in Roman history, and for a time she was effectively a public servant. Ancient sources credit her with supplying the poison that killed the emperor Claudius, and then at Nero's request the one that killed his stepbrother Britannicus at dinner, in front of the court. Nero is said to have rewarded her with estates and sent her students. She operated, in effect, as a licensed specialist under imperial protection, until Nero fell and the protection went with him. She was executed in 69 A.D.
