The history:

Aum Shinrikyo was a Japanese doomsday cult founded in 1984 by Shoko Asahara, blending Buddhist and Hindu imagery with apocalyptic prophecy. At its peak it claimed tens of thousands of members and controlled significant wealth and even a political wing. In March 1995 the group carried out a sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway during morning rush hour, killing 13 people and injuring thousands — one of the most serious acts of domestic terrorism in modern Japanese history. Asahara and several members were executed in 2018. Successor organisations remain under active government surveillance in Japan today.
