In 1974, farmers digging a well near Xi'an struck a clay head. Below them lay an army of more than 8,000 life-sized terracotta soldiers, each with a different face, buried to guard China's first emperor. But the soldiers are only the outer perimeter. The burial mound itself the tomb of Qin Shi Huang has never been opened. The historian Sima Qian, writing a century after the emperor's death, described a sealed palace beneath it containing replicas of the empire's rivers rendered in flowing liquid mercury, a ceiling of constellations, and crossbows rigged to fire on intruders. Soil surveys have found mercury concentrations in the mound far above natural levels. Chinese authorities have chosen not to excavate, partly because current archaeology would likely destroy what it found. The emperor who searched his whole life for immortality has now lain undisturbed for over two thousand years.
