The story:

The Danse Macabre, the Dance of Death spread through Europe in the wake of the Black Death: murals and woodcuts showing skeletons leading the living away, hand in hand, without malice. Death took the pope and the ploughman in the same procession, which was the entire point. Plague had killed indiscriminately, and the art that followed insisted this was not cruelty but fairness. By the nineteenth century the image had turned romantic, Death as a suitor rather than a reaper, an embrace instead of a seizure. The message never changed. Only the marketing did.
