The story:
The beaked mask is the most recognizable image in the history of medicine, and one of the least effective. Plague doctors stuffed the beak with dried flowers, herbs and spices, believing disease travelled through foul-smelling air. It did not. They carried a cane to examine patients without touching them, which was the only part of the costume that helped. Their remedies bloodletting, purging, vinegar, prayer did nothing for bubonic plague, and their visits were less treatment than notification. The Latin on the wall of countless plague-era ossuaries says it plainly: hodie mihi, cras tibi. Today me, tomorrow you.
