The story:

At Los Alamos, physicists studied a plutonium sphere by bringing two beryllium reflector shells close around it and watching the neutron activity climb a procedure so dangerous one colleague called it "tickling the dragon's tail." The rule was simple: never let the shells fully close. In 1945, a scientist's hand slipped and the core briefly went supercritical; he died within weeks. Less than a year later, a second physicist was holding the upper shell open with a flat-bladed screwdriver when it slipped again. He threw the shells apart with his bare hands to stop the reaction and saved everyone else in the room while receiving a fatal dose himself. The same plutonium core killed two men in under a year. They called it the Demon Core.
